Two university students are recovering after being attacked by five assailants while traveling in southern Chile.

Civil engineering students Sebastian Herceg Ruiz, Andres Egana and Tomas Frias were attacked while walking home from a party in Villa Cerro Castillo, a small town 110km south of Coyhaique (Region XI).

The attack occurred around 2:30 a.m. as the students – very drunk - were walking to their campsite with a local villager friend, Alexis Alvarado.

The students said a car suddenly pulled up and five men jumped out and began attacking their group. Herceg, 23, was cut in the face and on his back, while Egana, 22, was cut in his stomach. Alvarado, 27,  suffered wounds to his head.

The young men were taken to the local health clinic and then rushed by ambulance to the Hospital de Coyhaique. Herceg was flown to Santiago’s Clinica Las Condes on Sunday while Egana was transported there Monday night. Both are in stable condition.

Prosecutor Patricio Jory is investigating the case and said the initial investigations show inconsistencies within the witness’s statements.
