Universities In Valparaíso And Germany Sign Renewable Energy Cooperation Agreement

Valparaíso's Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM) and University of Applied Sciences (FH) in Bochum, Germany, supported by regional authorities of both countries, last week signed a cooperation agreement concerning renewable energy technology.

Park Authorities Justify Prices Increases; Tourism Agencies Call Them ‘Discriminatory’
 
Foreign tourists visiting the world famous Torres del Paine national park in Chile’s Patagonia will now have to pay 15,000 Chilean pesos (US$27) each time they enter the park grounds. The fee for local guides and transport staff is 4,000 Chilean pesos (US$7).
 
The increased fees apply to all foreigners except those who are actually staying at the hotels or hostels inside the park.

PATAGONIAN FIORDS CRUISE SEASON LAUNCHED IN PUNTA ARENAS

Last Friday, Chile’s Cruceros Australis and Comapa tourist agency launched the 2009/2010 Patagonian fiords cruise season in a ceremony held in Punta Arenas, La Prensa Austral has reported.

“Mare Australis” docked in the Arturo Prat Jetty hosted the launching, to which local authorities and tourist industry representatives were invited.

In First Successful Criminal Prosecution For Environmental Crime

A court this week found two wood pulp executives guilty of dumping company waste into the Mataquito River in Region VII in June, 2007.  Two former top executives at the Lincancel wood pulp plant - Erasmo Eduardo Quezada Leyton and Gustavo Kroll - are now facing significant fines, awaiting a final sentence on Oct. 6.

Four years after a negligent Czech citizen, Jiri Smitak, accidentally started a huge fire in the Torres Del Paine national park in far southern Chile, part of the destroyed area is being replanted in native forest trees.
