Ñuñoa Citizens Protest As Registry Closes Without Attending To Those Still In Line Chile’s voter registration service (SERVEL) worked overtime Sunday to register last minute “would-be voters,” but in some instances not long enough to handle all the citizens who wanted to register. HidroAysen Hosts – Cochrane And Villa O’Higgins - Would Receive US$49.5 Million Energy Minister Marcelo Tokman confirmed late last week that the government will soon propose to Congress a new law that will enrich local communities that house controversial electricity projects. The law aims to dampen opposition to polemical energy projects by requiring energy companies to pay a one-time tax of 270 UTMs per MW (about $10 Chilean million pesos or US$22,000 per MW) to local communities where large electricity producing operations are installed.
The controversial HidroAysen project specifically involves the Baker and Pascua Rivers, pictured here, both of which are in Region XI Photo Courtesy of CCARP

(Ed. Note: December’s presidential elections will mark a turning point for Chile, with its 17 million residents set to choose between center-left governing Concertación coalition candidate and former president Eduardo Frei, center-right Coalition for Change candidate and millionaire businessman Sebastián Piñera, and former actor and progressive independent candidate Marco Enríquez-Ominami.
While Chile has been praised on the international stage for its progressive politics, the right seems to be in its strongest position in years, holding the presidency of both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. Santiago Times writer Chris Noyce – soon returning to his studies in England - gives his take on Chile’s outlook for the future. )
